English

Our programmes of study are designed to ensure that all students develop a deep appreciation for the subject by studying and analysing a wide range of literature, taking them on a journey from early written texts to the modern day.

We also aim to encourage students to communicate with confidence and sophistication, our literacy programme ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our creative writing bulletins challenge students to express their creativity outside of the classroom and to enter national writing competitions.

Diverse theatre trips and author visits support classroom learning and we work with the Drama and Classics departments to develop our students’ appreciation of English through literature, theatre, prose and poetry. We also celebrate National Poetry Day and World Book Day through a varied programme of events each year. We encourage students to broaden and deepen their reading experience through the KS3 Reading Scheme programme and by collaborating with the Learning Resource Centre. By participating in public speaking competitions and the debating society, our students gain confidence, arguing persuasively and coherently. Many of our students go on to study English, Law, English Literature & Theatre Studies, and English Literature & Creative Writing at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.
