Governance

‘Governors have a very clear picture of the school’s work.
They challenge the school leaders and rigorously
check the impact of their actions.’

Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ October 2021

The Tiffin Girls’ School is a single academy trust (Company Number 07538459) incorporated in February 2011 as a company limited by guarantee with no share capital and having charitable status.

All Governors sit on the Governing Board (GB) and are Directors of the Academy for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006 and Trustees for the purposes of charity legislation. The GB sets the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school and delegates the day-to-day management of the school to the Headteacher, aided in turn by the Senior Leadership Team. The GB holds the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, the performance management of staff and the financial performance of the school and its use of public funds. Individual members of the GB have specialist skills that enable them to do this effectively. Such specialist skills include, for example, education, finance, premises and personnel.

The Governing Board meets nine times per academic year and has two committees (finance and contracts, and pay and personnel) and seven groups (admissions, audit and risk, fundraising, premises and infrastructure, student learning and progress, student welfare and Headteacher performance review). Committees meet formally once a term. Groups do not have scheduled formal meetings, except for the audit and risk, and Headteacher performance review groups, which meet twice a year. Each committee and group have terms of reference and delegated areas of responsibility approved annually by the Governing Board. Groups without scheduled meetings convene on an ad hoc basis as required.

Members of the Academy Trust play a limited but crucial role in safeguarding academy trust governance. The Members hold the Governing Board accountable through receiving key reports such as the School Development Plan and through approving the annual financial statements prior to publication on the school website.
