Choirs, Orchestras and Music Ensembles

The co-curricular music programme aims to give all our students the chance to experience sector-leading opportunities, with the aim to enhance every girl's holistic development and wellbeing through an enriching weekly programme and varied calendar of concerts.

Performance standards are exceptionally high, with a strong uptake across the year groups, in ensembles ranging from non-auditioned choruses to highly advanced, auditioned ensembles. Eight of our 18 weekly groups are directed by GCSE and A-Level students. To develop student leadership even further, girls can take part in a series of conducting masterclasses led by professional conductors.

In recent years, girls have performed at the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace, at St Martin-in-the-fields and at Ghent Cathedral in Belgium. Girls have performed and recorded with the award-winning Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh (CD released in 2019). In 2017 and 2018, girls performed in a series of world-class concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, which was broadcast live on television to forty countries and on BBC Radio 3. Their performances of Britten Spring Symphony at the Barbican attracted great acclaim and glowing reviews in the national press. Their performances of Berlioz Faust achieved five star reviews. In 2018-19, girls performed at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford and toured in Venice.

In school, girls take part in informal concerts, house singing competitions and whole school concerts. Year 7 takes part in evening concerts in the autumn and summer terms. Year 8 leads our autumn remembrance concert, supported by many of our ensembles. Year 9 takes part in a Rock Band competition and the winning band records in a professional recording studio. There are prizes for performing and composing, and our first concerto competition took place in autumn 2018.
