The Tiffin Girls' Music Society (TGMS) is a charity that was set up by parents to support the music provision in school. We work closely with the Music department, helping it to provide a top-class musical education and an outstanding range of free co-curricular activities open to all.

Every year TGMS funds provide the Music department with a budget that directly supports classroom and co-curricular music for all students. For 2019-20, we have increased the budget by 20% to buy required instruments and related musical equipment to support the department's longer term goals. Our stretch goal for the year is to help them invest in music technology and provide a dedicated suite of hardware and software to support creative composition.

How TGMS makes a difference

Our fundraising pays for items that make a real difference to the musical life of the school but cannot be covered by the department budget in these difficult financial times.

In 2019 we were able to support the department by raising funds for:
  • three tenor saxophones (£2,725)
  • a glockenspiel, music stands and a cart to widen oportunities for joining Percussion and other ensembles (£1,000), and
  • restoration of the 1979 Estonia Grand Piano in the hall to its former glory (£1,000).

We also continued to fund:
  • choral, percussion, symphony orchestra and wind quintet coaching
  • instrumental servicing and repairs
  • piano tuning
  • transport to Cambridge contribution
  • accompanist and venue cost for the trip to Bruges
  • Year 9 ‘Battle of the Bands’ studio recording prize.

In 2018 we were delighted to be able to contribute £7,500 towards the purchase of 24 new digital pianos to support charitable trust funding form Humphrey Richardson Taylor Charitable Trust.

With your support, we can continue to enhance the incredible musical opportunities for students.

You can find up-to-date information on recent and forthcoming musical events, including photos and videos, on the Music department web page.

How does TGMS raise funds?

  • Through members’ annual subscriptions
  • Selling refreshments and cakes at school concerts (we accept card payments for any amount)
  • Through EasyFundraising – please register TGMS as your preferred charity at to help us earn money at no cost to you when you shop online
  • Through charitable donations - contributions of any size would be much appreciated to support our fundraising goals for 2020. If you would like to make a corporate or personal donation, please contact our Treasurer. We can also claim Gift Aid on eligible personal donations
  • Through ticketed events such as our recent Cheese & Wine Evenings which provided opportunities for parents to socialise while helping to create a sense of community.

What else does TGMS do?

  • We write bids to charitable organisations allowing us to match fund for larger amounts
  • We act as stewards for ABRSM exams held in school, allowing parents and students the convenience of taking exams on site. (All stewards and chaperones must comply with the school's DBS checking and safeguarding procedures)
  • We support the Music staff by chaperoning students at external concerts and on trips.

Joining TGMS

Anyone connected with The Tiffin Girls' School can join TGMS - parents, carers, grandparents, friends. You don't have to have a daughter who plays an instrument or sings, and you certainly don't need to know anything about music yourself. All that is required is your support.

The subscription is £35 a year for family membership and £20 a year for individual membership. This entitles you to significant reductions on school concert tickets. You also have the satisfaction of knowing that your financial contribution is making a real difference to the musical life of the school and the range of musical opportunities open to your daughter.

You can download the membership form from the Key Downloads box.

As you fill in the form, please consider if you might like to get involved in a practical way. Joining the TGMS committee can be very sociable and is an excellent way to get to know other parents. We meet approximately six times a year, have a very collegiate and friendly approach, and are always looking for new members.

If you are unable to commit to a committee position, you can still help in a number of ways. You might be able to help sell refreshments at concerts once a year, or twice a term. You might want to donate some cakes or fundraise in other ways. Or you might have the time to help us increase our membership numbers.

Our successes are only possible with your time and commitment so any contribution you can make is greatly appreciated. Please contact Rachel Foster, Treasurer and Membership Secretary if you would iike more information on how to help.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Tiffin Girls’ Music Society.

Note: All committee members are required to comply with the school's DBS checking and safeguarding procedures.
